Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest regarding your recent advertisement. I understand that you are looking for someone to assist you in your home in upcoming summer.

I would be pleased to help you in your house duty, I have completed diploma course in a food and nutrition two months ago. Owing to that I can certainly help you with cooking. Moreover, I have one year of experience as a child care worker with that skills I can look after your child in mean time you can accomplish your other essential tasks.

I am keen to do this work as I will be having two months of summer break from my university, as a part of our holiday assignments I need to work with families and understand how people in our town navigate with hectic schedule and establish work-life balance.

Lastly, I would like make it clear that I will not be available everyday due to my other commitments. However, I will be available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, although, I can try to be available on Mondays but cannot make it during weekends.

Let me know when will you be available for further discussion.

Yours faithfully,

Mansi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your potential contributions (cooking and childcare), explained your motivation (university holiday assignment), and provided a specific schedule of availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a prospective employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are offering and why. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully integrated; for instance, the connection between your university assignment and the specific tasks you are offering could be slightly more explicit to demonstrate a stronger sense of purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Owing to that', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the comma splice in the second paragraph ('...house duty, I have completed...'). Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring correct punctuation between clauses would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'essential tasks', and 'hectic schedule' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'house duty' (better as 'household tasks') and 'in mean time' (should be 'in the meantime'). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid slightly awkward phrasings. Overall, your lexical range is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any significant impediment to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'in upcoming summer' should be 'in the upcoming summer', and 'with that skills' should be 'with those skills'. There are also some punctuation issues, such as the comma splice mentioned earlier and the missing preposition in 'Let me know when will you be available' (should be 'when you will be available'). While these errors do not prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and word order in indirect questions will help.
