Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing in response to your advertisement regarding the opportunity to work as a house-help, which i recently came across. I am very interested in this opportunity and would like to be considered for it.
I believe I would be well suited for this role, as I worked with a cleaning company before and have relevant experience. I am reliable, responsible and hardworking individual who is always willing to take on new responsibilities. I am confident that my skills and positive attitude would enable me to carry out the required duties effectively.
With regard to my availability, I am available 24/7 for next summer. I would also be happy to provide you any additional information you may require.
I would be grateful if you will consider giving me a chance. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Regards,
Harshpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You suggested how you could help (cleaning/general household tasks), explained your motivation (relevant experience and positive attitude), and stated your availability. However, the response is slightly underdeveloped. Specifically, the bullet point regarding availability is vague; stating '24/7' is unrealistic for a home-help role and does not clearly explain when you will or will not be available as requested. To improve, you should provide more specific details about your schedule to better meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'With regard to' and 'In addition' (implied), though the flow could be improved with more varied transition words. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, though the connection between sentences could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement,' 'opportunity,' and 'responsibilities' correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and functional. There is a lack of less common lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. For example, instead of 'house-help,' you could use 'domestic assistance' or 'household support.' The phrasing is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication, but the range is limited to standard, everyday English.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I believe I would be well suited for this role, as I worked with a cleaning company before.' There are some minor grammatical slips, such as the lowercase 'i' in the first paragraph and the slightly awkward phrasing 'provide you any additional information' (missing 'with'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from being considered error-free. To improve, ensure consistent capitalization and check for missing prepositions in your sentence constructions.
