Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I am writing to you in response to your advertisement of help required at home this coming summer.
Firstly i would like to provide a short description of my experience and credentials, I am a young individual holding a Personal Safety Worker license, which gives me knowledge of medication and its proper use. Also working in the culinary industry for many year have gifted me with the knowledge of cooking various cuisines. I will emphasize on my gardening skills that were bestowed upon me by my mother in my childhood, I have substantial knowledge about different plants and how to nurture them.
Taking into consideration, that I am an entrepreneur who does not have a full-time job I am usually open to try new things and very keen to help everybody. This opportunity to help others keeps me on my toes and be in touch with all the knowledge I have gained that can be passed on to other people too.
I will be happily open to work the weekdays starting morning to past noon. Unfortunately, I would block my availability on weekends to stay home and spend leisure time with the family.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your skills (safety, cooking, gardening), explained your motivation for wanting the work, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more directly linked to the specific context of helping Mrs. Barrett in her home. For instance, while your culinary skills are impressive, explicitly mentioning how you could assist with meal preparation would make your response more focused and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction and distinct paragraphs for each requirement. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Firstly' and 'Unfortunately', to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your skills and your motivation is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of linking phrases and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary, such as 'credentials', 'culinary industry', and 'substantial knowledge'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I will emphasize on my gardening skills' (emphasize does not take 'on') and 'block my availability' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions would help you achieve a higher score. Your spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'i' should be capitalized, and there is a comma splice in the second paragraph ('...credentials, I am...'). Additionally, 'working... have gifted me' contains a subject-verb agreement error, as 'working' is the subject and requires a singular verb. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
