Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request that I am willing to work as a helper in your house regarding which you gave an advertisement in the local newspaper.

I am a student and will have four months of summer vocation during which I was thinking to do a job to save some money for my fees and study expenses. As you are a englisg speaker, I would be really easy for us to understand each other as I am also quite fluent in english.

I rad in the advertisment that you want a person who can cook and can do clenaing. I think for this job, I would be the best fit as I have done profestional cooking course and also I did one year job as a sanitation worker.

My summer vocations will start from next week and will be able to start the job from sunday and the timings you can fix according to your comfortability. I hope you will response to my request.

I look forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Harpreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained how you could help (cooking and cleaning), why you want the job (to save for study expenses), and provided details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your intentions and qualifications. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening statement is more natural; for example, 'I am writing to express my interest in the helper position advertised in the local newspaper' is more professional than 'I am writing to request that I am willing to work'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As you are', 'I think', and 'I look forward to'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your paragraph transitions are smoother. For instance, the transition between your motivation and your specific skills could be improved by using a more sophisticated connector. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'fluent', 'professional', and 'sanitation'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'englisg', 'rad', 'clenaing', 'profestional') and some awkward word choices, such as 'summer vocation' instead of 'summer vacation' or 'summer break'. While these errors do not impede communication, they do affect the overall impression. To improve, focus on proofreading your work to catch these minor spelling slips and try to incorporate more precise collocations, such as 'gained experience' instead of 'did one year job'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Examples include 'I am writing to request that I am willing to work' (awkward phrasing), 'I was thinking to do a job' (should be 'I was thinking of taking a job'), and 'I hope you will response' (should be 'I hope you will respond'). While these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, they indicate a need for more careful attention to verb forms, prepositions, and word classes. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses will help you achieve a higher score.
