Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter in context to help you doing household chores for next summer.
I can assist you in everything such as laundry, cooking and washing dishes. other than this, i can also cut your lawn grass weekly. After bringing me on board you do not have to worry about eating your prescribed medicine on accurate time.
I am enrolled in personal support worker program at centennial college, Toronto. All my classmates have been asked to apply for internships, where we can voluntarily help people who need personal support.
All i need from you will be a letter head stating how many hours and days i helped you. Although, my college classes are not that flexible but i will make some room in my schedule. I will be available on the weekends from 9 am up to 6 pm in the evening.
I hope you consider me for this position. I will look forward for your response.
Regards,
Julie

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention helping with chores and medication, the explanation of why you want to do this work is slightly underdeveloped, focusing more on the internship requirement than a personal desire to assist Mrs. Barrett. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are expanded with more detail and that the tone remains consistently professional throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'other than this' and 'although' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'I am writing this letter in context to help you'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother, avoiding abrupt shifts in topic.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'household chores', 'prescribed medicine', and 'internships'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'in context to help you' and 'bringing me on board', which sound slightly unnatural in this specific context. Additionally, there are some capitalization errors, such as 'i' instead of 'I'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and standardizing your use of formal English will improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'help you doing' (should be 'help you with' or 'help you do'), 'cut your lawn grass' (should be 'mow your lawn'), and 'look forward for' (should be 'look forward to'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with capitalization and some awkward phrasing. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions, and ensure that you proofread for minor slips that occur throughout the text.
