Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing in response to your recent advertisement in newspaper regarding your need for a help for several hours a day in next summer.
I am interested in helping you out with your chores as I will have my summer vacation during your need of hours. I can lift heavy weights, can help with arranging a stuff around the house.
My grandmother also faces same problems in her life and I always help her with same kind of work, so as you are senior citizen I think of you as my grandmother. Also, my parents have always taught me that one should always help other who is in need of help.
My availability is as follows: I will be available between 12 P.M. to 8 P.M. during weekdays and I will be able to help you at any time during a weekend as per your need.
I look forward to your response. Please do not hesitate to ask my any other favors I am always eager to help.
Yours faithfully,
Ayush.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and detailing your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention helping with 'chores' and 'heavy weights', providing more specific examples of household tasks would have made your application more persuasive. Additionally, the comparison to your grandmother is a bit informal for a first-time professional contact. To improve, ensure that your ideas are fully extended to demonstrate your suitability for the role more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also' and 'My availability is as follows' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the paragraphing is functional but could be more sophisticated. To reach a higher band, focus on using more varied cohesive devices to connect your ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence starters.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'advertisement', 'vacation', and 'availability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'need of hours' (should be 'need for help') and 'arranging a stuff' (should be 'arranging stuff'). The range is somewhat limited, and you rely on basic phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to household assistance and professional communication, and pay closer attention to article usage and pluralization.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'in newspaper' (missing article), 'in next summer' (incorrect preposition), 'faces same problems' (missing article), and 'help other who is' (should be 'others who are'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on the correct use of articles (a/an/the), prepositions, and subject-verb agreement. Proofreading your work for these small but frequent errors will help you achieve a higher score.
