Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter in reference to your search for a person to help around at your home for a couple of hours during the summer. I can assist in numerous housekeeping activities like cleaning, dusting, moping, doing laundry, and cooking. Also, I can repair broken furniture, fix pipes of the house, and clean the roof, if required.

I would like to do this work as I have two years of housekeeping and caregiving experience. In my previous job, I looked after an octogenarian lady, assisting her in daily routine like bathing, cleaning, and taking her on walks to nearby parks. Hence, I would like to help people with their daily chores and activities as it gives me immense pleasure and happiness.

I would only be available on weekday afternoons from 1pm - 4pm as I work night shifts at a local produce warehouse. I can be extend my time in the evenings if required. Let me know if you would like to discuss it further. Thanks.

Yours sincerely,

Samantha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outline the types of assistance you can provide, such as housekeeping and minor repairs. You also provide a logical reason for wanting the job, linking it to your previous experience in caregiving. Finally, your availability is clearly stated, including the specific hours and the reason for your limited schedule. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from your skills to your motivation and finally to your availability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'In my previous job', and 'Hence' to link your thoughts effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow. The letter flows well from the opening to the closing, demonstrating a good command of organizational skills.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'housekeeping', 'caregiving', 'octogenarian', and 'warehouse'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context well, there are minor issues with collocation, such as 'help around at your home' (should be 'help around your home') and 'fix pipes of the house' (should be 'fix household plumbing'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations to describe your skills.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically correct. There are a few minor errors, such as 'I can be extend my time' (should be 'I can extend my time') and 'assisting her in daily routine' (should be 'assisting her with her daily routine'). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the tone remains consistent throughout the letter.
