Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I am writing this letter to you in connection with the advertisement that you posted.

I hope you are doing well. This is Hardeep Kaur. I am living nearby your home. I read your advertisement regarding help in your home. As I know you are arranging a birthday party for your son, and you need help with the arrangements. There are some ways I want to suggest to you the ways in which I can assist you, such as doing the cleaning, preparing food, and other household chores.

I would love to do this work for you for several reasons. The first and foremost reason is your nature, as I got to know about you from your neighbours, about your behaviour, that you are a very nice person. Apart from that, I read in your posted ad that you are paying a good amount of money for those hours of work. All these things inspired me to do work in your home.

I want to provide you with my schedule for doing work. I will be available from 10 am to 1 pm on Thursday, 21 August, because after that I will be too busy to go on vacation. Here is my contact number: [redacted phone]. You can call me anytime, as I am always at home these days.

I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Hardeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly suggest how you can help (cleaning, cooking), explain your motivation (the advertisement and the reputation of the recipient), and provide your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbor. However, the task mentions helping 'next summer,' but you restrict your availability to a single day in August. This creates a slight inconsistency with the prompt's premise of helping 'a few hours a day next summer.' To improve, ensure your details align more logically with the scenario provided in the instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that,' 'The first and foremost reason,' and 'I am writing this letter to you.' While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on standard list-like transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'in connection with,' 'household chores,' and 'inspired me' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'do work in your home' (better: 'work in your home') and 'I am living nearby your home' (better: 'I live near your home'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Incorporating more specific adjectives or professional terminology related to domestic assistance would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I am living nearby your home' should be 'I live near your home,' and 'I want to suggest to you the ways in which I can assist you' is slightly wordy. There are also minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'I got to know about you from your neighbours, about your behaviour.' Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication.
