Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter after reading an advertisement in yesterday's newspaper that you are looking someone to help you in your home for a few hours a day in next summer.

I am interested in doing your help in cleaning, laundry and in other household chores. Moreover, I can help you in buying groceries, any doctor's appointment or taking pets on walk, if you have any.

During summer, there is a break from July to September in my school. While working for you firstly it helps me in earning some money. Secondly, I believe that it allows me to improve my communication skills which will definitely help me in future.

I will be available on weekdays anytime between 9 am to 5 pm but not on weekends because on weekends, I have some personal commitments which is arduous for me to ignore.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Navdeep Kahlon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outline the types of assistance you can provide, explain your motivation for seeking the work, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for instance, by mentioning a specific interest in helping the elderly or a desire to gain experience in a professional environment, which would make your ideas more fully developed and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly' to link your ideas. While these are effective, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or more sophisticated transitions to connect sentences within paragraphs. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'household chores', 'personal commitments', and 'arduous'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'doing your help' (which should be 'providing assistance') and 'taking pets on walk' (which should be 'taking pets for a walk'). While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate your score. You have a sufficient range to convey your meaning clearly, but expanding your repertoire of idiomatic or topic-specific vocabulary would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'looking someone' (missing 'for'), 'in next summer' (unnecessary preposition), and 'which is arduous for me to ignore' (a bit clunky). Additionally, 'any doctor's appointment' is slightly awkward in this context. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on ensuring correct preposition usage and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
