IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I am writing this letter in response to the advertisement you posted last week regarding the grass cutting in your backyard. I run a small landscaping company and I could provide this service to you after your return to the town next summer.

I am interested in doing it because for new customers we provide one time free service. If they are satisfy with our work then we offer two different packages, one of them is pay per visit and the other one is annual package.

Our schedule for next summer is too busy and we have pre-bookings for the month of June and July. I will schedule an appointment with you for the last week of the July on Friday in the afternoon.

Please let me know if this day and timing is suitable for you. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Arshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points, but the content is somewhat misaligned with the prompt. The prompt asks for someone to help in her home for a few hours a day, but you have interpreted this as a professional landscaping service. While this is a creative interpretation, it feels more like a sales pitch than a personal letter to a neighbor. The explanation of your availability is also slightly confusing, as you mention being 'too busy' but then offer a specific appointment. To improve, ensure your response directly addresses the specific needs mentioned in the prompt rather than focusing on business marketing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am writing this letter', 'because', and 'if'. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The flow of ideas is generally easy to follow, but the use of linking words is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'landscaping company', 'pre-bookings', and 'prompt response'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'if they are satisfy with our work' (should be 'satisfied') and 'the last week of the July' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on correct adjective forms and article usage will improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'the grass cutting in your backyard' is slightly unnatural; 'cutting the grass' or 'lawn maintenance' would be better. Additionally, 'one time free service' should be 'a one-time free service'. There are also minor punctuation and article errors throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage.
