Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter to express my interest to do a housekeeping work in your house in upcoming summer.

I did my graduation in hotel management and I have some kind of knowledge about Cleaning, Cooking and managing the other required things. Moreover, I can help your children in their studies as well. As you do not need to hire any tutor from outside.

The main reason of deciding to doing this work is that I recently completed my studies and I do not have any job at present. Furthermore, this work would be beneficial for me as an experience.

For my availability, I will come on weekdays only from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm because I have Computer classes on weekends. I am ready to do extend my working hours if you will allow me.

I hope to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help (cleaning, cooking, tutoring), explain your motivation (recent graduate, seeking experience), and specify your availability (weekdays 8 am to 4 pm). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To improve, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could briefly elaborate on your specific experience in hotel management to make your application more persuasive. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'For my availability' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural. The paragraphing is clear and appropriate for a formal letter, which helps the reader follow your points easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'housekeeping', 'beneficial', and 'availability'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'interest to do a housekeeping work' (should be 'interest in doing housekeeping work') and 'managing the other required things'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your verb-noun combinations are natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I did my graduation' (should be 'I graduated'), 'the main reason of deciding to doing' (should be 'the main reason for deciding to do'), and 'I hope to hearing' (should be 'I hope to hear'). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to verb patterns and prepositions, and proofread your work to catch these small but persistent errors.
