Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing in response to your advertisement, which I saw in the newspaper, regarding the helper you need. I am very interested in taking part in this opportunity and believe I could help in the kitchen and also take care of your kids for a few hours a day.

Moreover, I have healthcare experience for 2 years as a personal support worker, where I learned cooking, cleaning, and taking care of children, as well as how to take care of the elderly. Right now, I recently quit my job, and I am studying further in healthcare, but I plan to do a part-time job, which will help me financially.

Apart from this, I am available after 1 pm every day except Sunday, as my school is only in the morning, and on Sunday I need to spend time with my family.

I would really appreciate it if you could let me know if you would like to meet and discuss the position in more detail.

Thank you,

S.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help (cooking, cleaning, childcare), explain your motivation (financial support while studying), and specify your availability (after 1 pm, excluding Sundays). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and you maintain a consistent focus throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from this', and 'in response to' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear. The transition between your experience and your availability is smooth, ensuring the letter reads as a cohesive whole. The use of referencing is accurate throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'taking part in this opportunity' and 'discuss the position in more detail' are natural and appropriate for the context. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations related to employment or caregiving. There are no spelling errors, and the word choices are consistently appropriate for the formal tone required in this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'I am writing in response to your advertisement, which I saw in the newspaper, regarding the helper you need' shows good control over complex clauses. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'I have healthcare experience for 2 years', which would be more naturally phrased as 'I have two years of experience in healthcare'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and verb tenses is generally strong.
