Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to you regarding the advertisement that you are looking for a househelp for next summer. I would like to inform you that I am interested to help you.
I am an international student and I often struggle to find a job in our town as I don’t have a car to commute. But, as I live on the street just across you, I can walk every day to come to your place.
Moreover I would like to inform you that I am familiar with all the house chores work like doing a laundry, cleaning, cooking meals, walking a dog, etecetera. I don’t mind doing any kind of work.
I am also mentioning my availability for following summer. I am available from 7AM to 12PM in the morning and 4 PM to 7PM in the evening.
Please let me know, if I can do anything for you. I would appreciate your response.
Yours Sincerely,
Jasmine

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained how you could help (laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc.), provided a logical reason for wanting the work (proximity and convenience), and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. To improve, you could expand slightly on your experience or skills to make your application more persuasive, as the current development is quite brief. However, all requirements of the task are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'But' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly fragmented; for instance, the sentence about your availability could be better integrated into a cohesive paragraph. The flow is generally easy to follow, but more varied linking words or phrases would help the text feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use relevant terms like 'commute', 'advertisement', and 'house chores'. There are some minor errors, such as 'househelp' (which should be 'household help' or 'domestic help') and 'etecetera' (spelling error). Additionally, 'house chores work' is redundant; 'household chores' is sufficient. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'interested to help' (should be 'interested in helping') and 'the advertisement that you are looking for' (should be 'the advertisement stating that you are looking for'). The phrase 'I am also mentioning my availability for following summer' is slightly awkward; 'I would like to outline my availability for the coming summer' would be more natural. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear.
