Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this letter to response your advertisement for someone help you at next summer.
I could help you in various tasks such as regular household chores such as cleaning, dusting and washing clothes. If you have children i would be happy to take care of them. I could also give water to plants if you have garden as i am keenly interested in gardening.
It would be a great opportunity for me because i love to help others . i have learned numerous skills such as patience, realibility from my clinical placement of personal support worker. This position would also helps me to earn some extra money which i can use in my studies.
The most prominent thing about my availability is that i would not be present for you during weekends because i am also doing part time work at Tim Hortons as a baker. So i have to go over there. I would be quite happy to help you during weekdays.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, while you mention your experience as a personal support worker, you could have elaborated more on how those specific skills would benefit Mrs. Barrett directly. Additionally, there are minor grammatical slips in the opening sentence, such as 'response your advertisement' instead of 'respond to your advertisement', which slightly affects the professional impact of the letter. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also', 'because', and 'so' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the natural progression of the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure that referencing is consistently clear throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'advertisement', 'household chores', 'opportunity', and 'prominent'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'give water to plants' (should be 'water the plants') and 'realibility' (spelling error). You also use 'go over there' which is a bit informal for a formal letter. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations and more formal alternatives will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'If you have children i would be happy to take care of them.' However, there are several recurring grammatical errors, including missing articles ('at next summer'), incorrect verb forms ('This position would also helps me'), and capitalization errors (the pronoun 'i' should always be capitalized). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and basic punctuation rules to ensure your writing is more accurate.
