Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Madam,

I am writing in response to your advertisement regarding the position of someone to assist you in your home next summer. I would be very interested in helping you and would like you to provide information about my availability and suitability for this role.

To begin with, I would be happy to help you with a number of tasks, including cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, and preparing simple meals. I would also assist you in managing the house, such as placing furniture and the bed in the right place. Setting up the bedsheets and all, depending on your requirements.

Furthermore, I am interested in this work because I have a keen interest in helping others and would like to gain some valuable experience while earning money during the summer. In addition to that, I believe that I am quite good at doing household chores and consider myself good at organising things in the house.

Talking about my availability, I would be available Monday to Friday, preferably in the morning and early afternoons. However, I would not be able to work on weekends as I have my studies as well.

Finally, I would be grateful if you could consider my application and give me the chance of working for you. I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

With Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined the tasks you could perform, explained your motivation for seeking the work, and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Madam' is slightly generic given the prompt provided a name ('Mrs Barrett'). To reach a higher band, ensure you address the recipient by the name provided in the instructions. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a home-help position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition to that' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of your request. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your intentions throughout the letter. The structure is consistent with standard formal letter-writing conventions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'suitability', 'household chores', and 'organising'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat repetitive and lacks a wider variety of less common or more precise collocations. For instance, 'placing furniture and the bed in the right place' is a bit simplistic. Incorporating more sophisticated synonyms or idiomatic expressions related to domestic work would elevate your score. Overall, the vocabulary is accurate and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are minor issues, such as the fragment 'Setting up the bedsheets and all, depending on your requirements', which lacks a main verb. Additionally, 'Talking about my availability' is a slightly informal way to transition; 'Regarding my availability' would be more appropriate for a formal letter. Despite these minor slips, your grammar is strong enough to convey your message clearly without confusion.
