Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to express that I would be interested in helping you with your house chores, including arranging and organizing the furniture. In addition to this, I can clean up the space and sanitize and sterilize the area for you.
I am always keen to do this kind of social work, as I love to help people with their work. I have experience in the cleaning field, as I worked in a mall for a cleaning staff company named "The Bees". I worked with the company for 2 years, and my reason for leaving the job was the distance and time it took me to reach the job location.
I would be available to work every day. However, I won't be able to work on weekends after 1 pm as I have plans to go to my dance class in town. Secondly, I would be able to work from 10 am in the morning to 6 pm in the evening.
Let me know if you are interested, and please call me on my number [redacted phone].
Yours sincerely,
xyz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help (cleaning, organizing furniture), explain your motivation (enjoyment of social work and relevant experience), and provide specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding your specific cleaning skills or how you might organize the furniture, which would add more depth to your proposal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'However', and 'Secondly' to link your ideas. While the structure is sound, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or more sophisticated transitions to move beyond basic sequencing. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sanitize', 'sterilize', and 'relevant experience'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. However, there are some instances where the word choice could be more precise; for example, 'social work' is not the most accurate term for domestic help, and 'cleaning field' is slightly informal. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific collocations related to household management would help elevate your score. The spelling is accurate throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to express that I would be interested in...' and 'I won't be able to work on weekends after 1 pm as I have plans...'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your grammar is generally accurate. There are minor issues, such as the redundant 'in the morning' after '10 am', but these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater control.
