Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well.I just saw your advertisement on Facebook that you need a cleaning lady for 4 to 5 hours per day from next summer. I am an international student and I am looking for a part-time job that matches my schedule so I found this opportunity fits very well in my schedule.

Also,I have two years of experience in providing cleaning services that includes dusting, mopping , microwave and refrigeration deep cleaning. I hope you will like my service as well and give me an opportunity to earn some extra money for paying my tuition fees. According to my next term lectures, I will be available on Monday , Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00PM to 8:00PM but unfortunately I am not available on weekends.

I will look forward to hear back from you soon. Have a great day. Thanks for your quality time.

Your sincerely,

Sukhwinder.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help (cleaning services), explain your motivation (earning money for tuition), and specify your availability (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why' to make your application more persuasive, perhaps by mentioning your reliability or enthusiasm for the work. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also' and 'but' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences. For example, the transition between your experience and your availability is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is present, but ensure you maintain consistent spacing between paragraphs to improve the visual structure of your letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'opportunity', and 'tuition fees'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'quality time' (which usually refers to time spent with loved ones) instead of 'time and consideration'. You also use 'cleaning lady', which is acceptable but could be more professional. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to household management or professional service to show a broader range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several punctuation and grammatical errors, such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'well.I'), incorrect capitalization after commas, and a slight error in the closing ('Your sincerely' should be 'Yours sincerely'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic punctuation and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
