Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am interested in the part-time job at your home in the next summer that was recently advertised.
I came to know through an ad that you are looking for a person in order to take care of your two children at your home. I am pleased to do this job because it aligns with my interest. I have five years of experience in a child care field. So, I can be a perfect person for this position.
I would love to do this job as I recently moved to your neighbor and currently looking for a job to manage my daily financial expenses. Moreover, I enjoy spending time with children and also have experience to stimulate children towards good values and learning.
Currently, I am studying, so I have to attend classes from Monday to Thursday and in the evening I need to complete my assignments. I am available from Friday to Sunday and my schedule is flexible during these days. I would be more than happy to work according to your preferences.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I hope my request would be considered for this position. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Soni.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained how you could help (childcare), why you want the job (financial reasons and interest in children), and your availability (Friday to Sunday). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbor. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the task. Your purpose is clear from the beginning, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific examples of the 'good values' you mentioned teaching, but overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Currently' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to improve the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'aligns with my interest' and 'manage my daily financial expenses' are effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'moved to your neighbor' (should be 'moved to your neighborhood') and 'stimulate children towards' (a slightly unnatural collocation). While you demonstrate a good command of general vocabulary, the use of more precise, academic, or professional collocations would elevate your score. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for the highest bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'in the next summer' (should be 'next summer') and 'experience in a child care field' (should be 'the childcare field'). Additionally, 'I hope my request would be considered' could be more naturally phrased as 'I hope you will consider my application.' Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is strong, and the errors do not impede communication. You show a good grasp of tense usage and sentence construction.
