Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear MRS Barrett,

I recently came across an advertisement in the local news paper that you are looking for some one who could help you at your house for a few hours. I would like express my interest in helping you as a house help.

I am well known with the basic house chores and i am good at cooking. I had grown up in a house hold of 10 members, where we each had a rotational duty in doing the chores. Our mother made as help in the kitchen, that's where i learned how to cook. I believe that i could help you out in what ever ways that i am capable of helping you.

I would love to help you because when i saw your advertisement in the paper it made me remember my late-grand mother who had lived at the country side alone for a great time after my grand father's death, she had a hard time getting things done her own. Its my pleasure help a senior citizen.

I am free during the evenings from 5pm to 6pm after my college hours. Also your address shoes that you live about 2 blocks away from my current residence.

I wont available in the mornings and afternoon because i have classes.

I expect a reply from you soon and hope i could visit you and express why i wish to help more in person.

Yours Faithfully,

Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could help (chores and cooking), provided a personal motivation for the work, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbor, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of availability is more precise; for instance, you mention being free from 5pm to 6pm but then state you are not available in the mornings and afternoons, which is clear but could be structured more professionally. Overall, the ideas are relevant and well-developed for the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also', 'because', and 'I believe that' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural progression. For example, the transition between your experience with chores and your motivation for helping could be smoother. Paragraphing is used correctly, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which helps the reader follow your points easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'residence', and 'senior citizen' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'well known with' (should be 'familiar with') and 'house hold' (should be 'household'). Additionally, 'at the country side' should be 'in the countryside'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word choices are natural in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would like express' (missing 'to'), 'made as help' (should be 'made us help'), and 'I wont available' (missing 'be'). Punctuation errors, such as the inconsistent capitalization of 'MRS' and 'i', also occur frequently. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that you proofread for small omissions like missing auxiliary verbs or prepositions.
