Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing great. Today I saw the advertisement that you have given in the newspaper about the help of a person in your home for a few hours.
I wanted to let you know that I am available to help you. I can help you in your home chores, like cleaning, cooking, laundry, gardening and if you need assistance in helping your baby. I can aid you in these things.
I would like to do this job as you that its summer time and I have a break from my work for some days. So I have leisure time and I want to earn some money and in this way I don’t feel boredom. That is why I want to assist you.
I am available to work from morning to evening on weekdays and I can not help you on weekends because I have some plans with my friends.
I am waiting for your response or call, if it’s suitable for you. I have given my contact number and email address below.
Kind regards,
Namika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outline the types of assistance you can provide, explain your motivation for seeking the work, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail in the 'why' section; for instance, instead of simply mentioning boredom, you could express a genuine interest in helping Mrs Barrett or gaining experience in home management. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear and consistent purpose throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'so', 'and', and 'that is why' to connect your thoughts. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'Regarding my availability') to make the flow between sentences feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'advertisement', 'assistance', and 'leisure' are used correctly. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'help of a person' instead of 'help from someone' or 'don’t feel boredom' instead of 'avoid boredom'. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and more precise verbs. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more descriptive or formal synonyms would demonstrate a stronger command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'you that its summer time' (missing 'know' and the apostrophe in 'it's') and 'I can not help you on weekends because I have some plans' (which is grammatically correct but could be more fluid). Punctuation is generally sound, though some sentence constructions are slightly repetitive. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of complex sentence structures to reduce the frequency of minor errors.
