Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this to express my interest regarding the advertisement which I read in the newspaper.
Firstly, I am eager to assist you in teaching our local language since I am a certified person in early chilhood education and have hands-on experience in teaching from past four year. Besides this, my teaching involves practicle learning method which encourages your family to inculcate new language without stress.
In addition to that, I am an excellent cook which enables me to prepare several dishes for your family. Moreover, I recently occupied a job nearby your house and my work has basically morning shifts. Thus, I would like to help you during evening time because I do not have to spend much time in communting in order to reach at your location. Meanwhile, I will be able to spend my spare time in quality work.
I look forward to your response.
Kind regards,
Krisha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You suggested specific ways to help (teaching and cooking), explained your motivation, and clarified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To improve, ensure your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on why you are interested in this specific role beyond just stating you are a certified teacher. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition to that', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the teaching and cooking sections could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the structure follows a standard letter format, which helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inculcate', 'certified', and 'communting'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'chilhood' (childhood), 'practicle' (practical), and 'communting' (commuting). Additionally, 'occupied a job' is not the most natural collocation; 'secured a position' or 'started a job' would be more precise. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'from past four year' (should be 'for the past four years') and 'reach at your location' (should be 'reach your location'). The phrase 'I am a certified person' is slightly awkward; 'I am a certified professional' would be better. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage.
