Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I saw your advert on Indeed requesting applications from applicants interested in working as help in your house this coming summer. I am writing to express my interest in the job through this letter, suggest areas where I can be of help, explain the reason behind my interest and state my availability.
I am a professional house help with over three years of work experience. My core skills are: organising the house, keeping the garden, and carrying out domestic repair work.
I am quite passionate about this job not only because it is my only source of livelihood, but also because it is something I love doing.
Currently, I work with an agency on a one-year contract, which is due to expire at the end of this month, which makes me entirely free for the summer. However, I prefer working in the morning and having the rest of the day to myself, so I would prefer that my working hours are between 9 am to 12 noon.
I earnestly await a favourable response to my application.
Yours faithfully,
Idowu Tofunmi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your skills in home organization and maintenance, explained your motivation, and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why'—for example, by mentioning specific personal qualities that make you a good fit for Mrs Barrett, rather than focusing primarily on the job being your source of livelihood. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'not only because... but also because', to connect your thoughts. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words to transition between sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear and easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'livelihood', 'favourable response', and 'domestic repair work' correctly. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it is somewhat functional and lacks a more sophisticated or varied range of collocations. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language or idiomatic expressions that sound natural in a professional context. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate, and your punctuation is generally correct. There is a minor issue in the second paragraph where 'keeping the garden' is slightly unnatural; 'maintaining the garden' would be more precise. Additionally, the sentence structure in the fourth paragraph is a bit repetitive with the use of 'which'. Overall, your control of grammar is good, and the occasional errors do not interfere with the clarity of your message.
