Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am interested to help you next summer.

I can help you couple of hours everyday with your house chores like cleaning, vacuuming, washing dishes and tidying rooms. I can also help you to do groceries.

I would like to help you because I am studying hotel management course right now, and I am looking for part time job which allows me to work few hours a day, and it also helps me to gain my work experience of how to manage cleanliness.

I need to attend my college 7 am to 3 pm, from Monday to Friday, so I would not available in mornings, but I can help you couple of hours after that, and also I can help you anytime on Saturday and Sunday.

I would like to hear from you, so let me know if you would like to take my help during next summer.

Kind regards,

Astha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline the types of household assistance you can provide, explain your motivation for wanting the job in relation to your studies, and provide specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an acquaintance. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how your hotel management studies specifically prepare you for the tasks mentioned, such as maintaining high standards of hygiene.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific details of the offer. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also' and 'so' to link ideas. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to this') to make the flow between sentences feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'house chores', 'tidying', and 'gain work experience'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and basic. There are minor inaccuracies, such as 'interested to help' (should be 'interested in helping') and 'do groceries' (usually 'do the grocery shopping'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and a broader range of descriptive language to convey your enthusiasm and professional intent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('help you couple of hours', 'gain my work experience') and prepositional errors ('attend my college 7 am to 3 pm'). Additionally, there are minor tense and structure issues like 'I would not available'. To achieve a higher band, focus on consistent use of articles and prepositions, and ensure that your verb phrases are grammatically complete.
