Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter for proposal of your house help from upcoming summer.

As soon I saw your advertisement on New York times on 25th of December I was highly excited and interested to help you with maintaining your cars and garage.

I like to assist you because of two reasons firstly, I am a free lancer mechanic from last 10 years and recently start looking for this kind of part time opportunity for my bread and butter. Moreover, I know your husband personally we studied together from same university he is my great friend and because of that I will happy to provide you any kind of help.

I can work all weekdays from 2pm to 6pm except Wednesday's because I travel big city every Wednesday for prayers in our cultural temple. Feel free to reach me anytime for any further queries.

Your sincerely,

Gourav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and detailing your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention being a mechanic, you could have elaborated more on the specific tasks you would perform in her home to better demonstrate your suitability. The letter is functional and covers the requirements, but it lacks the depth of detail that would elevate it to a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'moreover' and 'firstly' to connect your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and some mechanical errors in punctuation, such as the incorrect use of apostrophes (e.g., 'Wednesday's'). The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'freelancer' and 'advertisement'. However, there are several instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors, such as 'proposal of your house help' instead of 'offer to help around your house' and 'bread and butter' which is an idiom that does not fit the formal tone of this letter. Expanding your range of vocabulary and focusing on more precise collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'I am writing this letter for proposal of your house help from upcoming summer' (preposition and article errors) and 'I travel big city' (missing preposition). Additionally, there are issues with verb tenses, such as 'recently start looking' instead of 'recently started looking'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent a higher score.
