Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I am writing in response to an advertisement regarding hiring a helping hand this summer and I would like to apply for the role.
I believe that I would be well-suited in the role as be an eldest of three siblings. I have performed all of the household duties since childhood. Moreover, I am cognizant of all household chores including cleaning, dusting, washing and ironing. Furthermore, being a gardening expert, I can also help you to harvest several fresh vegetables and fruits.
I am a postgraduate student at Fleming College and due to summer break, I can be available to help you with household work. Besides, I can also earn and save some money for my next year’s semester fees.
Being the eldest daughter, I have a responsibility to cook breakfast for everyone. Therefore, I can start my day at 08:00am. In addition, I would like to get Sunday off as I like to visit church and spend some time with my family.
I would be delighted to meet you at your convenience and discuss the position further.
Yours sincerely,
Shubpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your household skills, explained your motivation for seeking the work, and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing Mrs. Barrett with a clear picture of your capabilities and schedule. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of why you want the work is more directly linked to the specific context of helping Mrs. Barrett, rather than focusing primarily on your own financial needs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Furthermore,' 'In addition,' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the task. To improve, try to vary the placement of your cohesive devices to make the progression of ideas feel more natural and less reliant on sentence-initial connectors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'cognizant,' 'postgraduate,' and 'convenience.' These choices are generally accurate and appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'well-suited in the role' (should be 'well-suited for the role') and 'as be an eldest' (which is grammatically awkward). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively. To achieve a higher score, focus on refining collocations and using more sophisticated phrasing to describe your experience.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'as be an eldest' and 'I can be available to help you with household work' (which is slightly redundant). Additionally, '08:00am' is non-standard; '8:00 am' or '08:00' is preferred. Despite these errors, the meaning is never in doubt, and the grammar does not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed with greater precision.
