Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing this letter regarding your job post in the classified page of the local magazine. I understand that you are in search of someone to help you at your home for few hours during next summer.

I am very happy to assist you during next summer. I’m available from morning 9 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday. I am not available on Sunday. I also stay in the same neighbourhood. It would be a great opportunity for me to assist you as travelling to your place is not a big hurdle for me, having said that I am looking for work in the same city.

Furthermore, I am good at cleaning, gardening and cooking. I can be of a great assistant to you to handle your core activities during day time as per your comfort.

I look forward to hearing from you at the earliest.

Yours faithfully

Usha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention cleaning and gardening, expanding slightly on your experience or enthusiasm for these tasks would have made the letter more persuasive. The response is functional and meets the requirements of the task effectively, though it lacks the depth required for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'I also', which help the flow of the text. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy for the reader to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'classified page', 'opportunity', and 'core activities'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'big hurdle' and 'morning 9 am', which sound slightly unnatural. While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the precision or variety that would characterize a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and ensure that word combinations sound natural to a native speaker.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'It would be a great opportunity for me to assist you as travelling to your place is not a big hurdle for me'. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'for few hours' (missing an article) and 'during day time' (missing an article). Additionally, 'having said that' is used incorrectly in this context, as it usually introduces a contrasting point rather than an explanation. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
