Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well.

My name is Krupa. I recently came across an advertisement about a vacancy of a house-help during upcoming summer. I am writing this letter to formally apply for that position.

Cooking and cleaning are my passion. I can help you with preparing breakfast and meals. Once that's done I can also help with regular dusting or mopping. Moreover, I have expertise in cleaning crockery and other glassware hence, if needed I would be happy to help with it.

I have been serving as a help for more than 20 years in the neighbourhood. However, due to my age, I am unable to work full-time. The main reason that attracted me towards this position is the hours. I would be available from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on weekdays and weekends respectively.

Please let me know if you require more details.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined your potential assistance (cooking, cleaning, glassware), explained your motivation (experience and interest), and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To improve, you could provide more specific details about your availability, as the phrase 'weekdays and weekends respectively' is slightly ambiguous regarding the specific hours for each. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'hence' to link your sentences. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. To reach a higher band, ensure that your paragraphing is consistently used to separate distinct ideas and consider using a wider variety of linking words to connect your points more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'came across an advertisement' and 'formally apply' are appropriate for this context. However, there are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'vacancy of a house-help' which is slightly unnatural; 'vacancy for a domestic helper' would be more precise. You also use 'serving as a help', where 'working as a domestic assistant' would be more professional. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations related to household tasks would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of basic sentence structures and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'advertisement about a vacancy of a house-help during upcoming summer' (missing articles: 'the upcoming summer'). Additionally, 'The main reason that attracted me towards this position is the hours' is grammatically sound, but the subsequent sentence regarding your availability is slightly confusing due to the use of 'respectively'. While you use some complex sentences, increasing the variety of your grammatical structures would help demonstrate a higher level of control.
