Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I read your advertisement in the newspaper about the house help you required for next summer. I am writing this letter to apply for that position as I will be having summer vacation and I would like to earn money in that vacation.

I would like to do a part time job during my summer vacation and your vacancy would be a great deal for me. I know all household chores as I am elder child in my house. I also have cooking skills which will be very beneficial to you as you enjoy having Indian food. Moreover, I like to organise things properly and I am a very tidy person therefore I believe that I would be perfect for this job. I will take care of all the house work and cooking for you. I want to apply for the dance classes during the summer break and I need money for this class. Therefore, I need a part-time job to fulfil my wish. I will be available for morning hours and afternoon hours. I won't be able to come in the evening as I will join dance class during the evening time. I am very good at all house related work. If you would like I can also provide you references of my family and friends and you can contact them about my skills related questions.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. I hope for a prompt response from you.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Varsha Rathod

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could help (household chores and cooking), explained your motivation (earning money for dance classes), and specified your availability (mornings and afternoons). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an acquaintance or potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear picture of your skills and constraints. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your personal goals and the job is kept concise to maintain a professional focus throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to your skills, then your availability, and finally a closing statement. Paragraphing is used, though the middle paragraph is quite long and could have been split to improve readability. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Therefore', but the flow is occasionally slightly repetitive, particularly in the way you mention your summer vacation and dance classes. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a distinct focus would enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'household chores', 'beneficial', and 'prompt response'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive. For example, you use the phrase 'summer vacation' multiple times. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or synonyms to avoid repetition. While your meaning is always clear, the lexical range is not yet sophisticated enough to reach the higher bands. Focusing on topic-specific vocabulary related to domestic work or professional correspondence would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I will be having summer vacation' (should be 'I will be on summer vacation') and 'I am elder child' (should be 'the elder child'). Additionally, there are some minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'dance classes during the evening time' which is slightly redundant. Despite these errors, your meaning is consistently clear, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing your use of varied complex structures and refining your control over articles and prepositions will help improve your score.
