Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter to you regarding your advertisement for a helping hand next summer.

My name is Roland the son of Mrs Patricia who is your friend living in the same town. I am a very handy and multi-skilled person capable to multi-tasking. I can cook, do the laundry, keep the garden neat, great plumbing and electrical skills. I am a versatile individual and could help you in various ways including cleaning.

I would like to work with you mainly because of the pay and less activity this summer. Your offer of 15 dollar an hour is a great way for me to save some money for school. I would also be at home during the summer holiday and would likely be less engaged with numerous activities.

However, one very important factor to put into consideration is the time because I would not be available at all time and everyday. During the weekdays mondays, thursdays and fridays I would not be available, but wednesdays and all through the weekend at any given time except evenings is rather convenient for me.

I hope this letter finds you in good health for your consideration.

Kind regards,

Roland.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help Mrs Barrett by mentioning cooking, laundry, gardening, and basic repairs, and you introduce yourself as a friend's son. You explain why you want to do the work, specifically citing the pay and wanting to save money for school, although mentioning "less activity" is slightly informal. Furthermore, you effectively outline your availability by stating the exact days you are free, such as Wednesdays and weekends, and when you are busy. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, meaning the requirements are fully met, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear logical organisation, beginning with a proper salutation, an introductory statement, body paragraphs addressing specific requirements, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction and skills in the second paragraph, motivation in the third, and availability in the fourth. However, paragraphing could be slightly more refined, and some cohesive devices feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as "However, one very important factor". Referencing is generally clear, but transitional links between sentences occasionally feel abrupt. Overall, the text demonstrates a coherent arrangement that allows the reader to follow your message easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items like "versatile individual" and "multi-skilled". However, there are some awkward word choices and phrasing errors, such as "capable to multi-tasking" instead of "capable of multitasking" and "great plumbing and electrical skills" which lacks a proper verb structure. Additionally, "15 dollar an hour" should be plural. While these lexical inaccuracies and minor slips are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in your grammatical structures. You successfully use relative clauses and compound sentences, such as "My name is Roland the son of Mrs Patricia who is your friend living in the same town" and "I would also be at home during the summer holiday and would likely be less engaged." However, punctuation is occasionally lacking, particularly missing commas in lists and around appositives (e.g., "Roland the son of"). There are also minor grammatical errors, such as "at all time and everyday" instead of "at all times and every day". Despite these errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and communication is never impeded.
