Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you regarding your advertisement for someone to help you in your home next summer. The main purpose of this letter is to express my interest in this work and offer my assistance.

To begin with, I would like to mention that I could help you with several household tasks, including cleaning, cooking, shopping, and gardening. This is important because I have experience doing these activities at home. As a result, I believe I could make your daily routine easier and more comfortable.

Furthermore, I would like to explain that I am interested in this work because I enjoy helping others and meeting new people. In particular, this opportunity would allow me to improve my English communication skills. I believe this will also provide me with useful experience for the future.

Finally, regarding my availability, I will be available from Monday to Friday after 2 p.m. throughout the summer. I would appreciate it if you could arrange my working hours during these times. This would allow me to work regularly, although I will not be available on weekends.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my situation. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. In the second paragraph, the student suggests specific household tasks such as 'cleaning, cooking, shopping, and gardening' fulfilling the first requirement. The second requirement is met in the third paragraph by explaining the desire to help others and improve English communication skills. Finally, the third bullet point is covered by stating availability from Monday to Friday after 2 p.m. while excluding weekends. The tone of the letter is appropriately polite and consistent with a general writing task. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. Therefore, this response comfortably achieves a strong band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter demonstrates a clear and logical organisation from beginning to end. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with the purpose of the letter, moving into the suggested help and reasons for applying, and concluding with availability. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally', which guide the reader smoothly through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing throughout the letter is clear and unambiguous. The progression of ideas feels natural and appropriate for a semi-formal correspondence. All aspects of cohesion are well managed, warranting a solid score in this category.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for a general letter. Phrases such as 'express my interest', 'daily routine', and 'English communication skills' demonstrate good control over common lexical items. While the vocabulary is largely standard rather than highly sophisticated or uncommon, it is used accurately and effectively to convey the message without any noticeable strain on the reader. Spelling and word choice are entirely accurate throughout the response. Although it lacks the wider, more flexible range of less common lexical items required for higher bands, the vocabulary is precise and fits the context well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to you regarding your advertisement for someone to help you in your home next summer' and 'This would allow me to work regularly, although I will not be available on weekends.' Grammar and punctuation are handled with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of the sentences are error-free, and control over verb tenses, modal verbs, and clause structures is consistently strong. There are no noticeable grammatical slips or awkward phrasings that impede communication. The control demonstrated here aligns well with the descriptors for a high band score.
