Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to express my strong interest in enhancing your newly constructed home for the next summer. Recently, I saw an advertisement published in a local newspaper last week. I believe based on past work experience and skills, I would be more suitable for the work you intend to finish next summer.
I can help you designing the interior of bedroom and kitchen area based on your choices. Furthermore, I will make sure that air will be circulated throughout your house using clean vents which keeps the home temperature lower. Additionally, all the pre-requisites like installing microwave, washing machine and dryers will be provided as a free service which other companies charge for it.
I believe no other individual contractors can give the best services as I can. Moreover, the amount of work I charge is based on the number of hours completed rather than the entire day. Our team is professional and trained to finish the intended work with cleanliness.
Usually I am used to move based on the number of contracts signed in the town. However, I prefer to work on weekdays for clients and to take days off on weekends as I need to devote family time to look after my two children.
I have applied to the advertisement along with my personal information including a phone number and email address. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Viral

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all bullet points of the task well. You successfully suggested how you could help in her home by mentioning interior design and installation services. You explained why you would like to do this work by stating your strong interest based on past experience, and you detailed your availability, specifying that you prefer to work on weekdays and take weekends off to care for your children. However, the initial premise of 'enhancing your newly constructed home' feels slightly mismatched with the prompt, which asks for someone to 'help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer' (often implying general household help or chores rather than contracting work). Despite this slight misinterpretation of the specific role, all parts of the prompt are addressed clearly, and the ideas are relevant and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear overall progression and logical arrangement. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, such as the introduction of purpose, specific services provided, professional pricing, availability, and closing remarks. Cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or overused for a personal letter format. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing throughout the text remains clear, allowing the reader to follow your argument and schedule without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'pre-requisites', 'individual contractors', and 'personal information'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'enhancing your newly constructed home for the next summer' instead of 'next summer', and 'air will be circulated... using clean vents which keeps' where subject-verb agreement and collocation could be improved. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, though it occasionally lacks the natural phrasing of an experienced native speaker.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent command of English grammar. You successfully utilised complex structures such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Usually I am used to move based on... However, I prefer...'). However, there are a few persistent grammatical errors, such as 'I can help you designing' (should be 'design' or 'with designing'), 'the amount of work I charge' (pricing is charged, work is performed), and 'devote family time to look after' (which sounds slightly unnatural). Punctuation is generally good, and these errors rarely impede communication.
