Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in your advertisement for a home helper for the upcoming summer. As a resident of the same neighbourhood, I would love the opportunity to assist you.
I can help with a wide variety of household tasks to make your daily routine smoother. Specifically, I am more than happy to handle light cleaning, organizing cupboards, washing dishes, and preparing healthy meals. Additionally, I am available to run errands outside the house, such as grocery shopping or picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy.
I am eager to do this work because I genuinely enjoy helping others and maintaining an orderly home environment. Moreover, as I plan to pursue a hospitality degree in the future, gaining practical experience in home management would be incredibly valuable to me. It would also be a wonderful way to give back to a member of my local community.
Regarding my availability, I will be fully available from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout May and June. However, I will not be available on weekends due to prior family commitments, and I will be away on a pre-planned vacation during the final week of August.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Viral

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task prompt in a comprehensive and clear manner. In the second paragraph, the writer clearly suggests how they can help in Mrs Barrett's home by mentioning light cleaning, organizing cupboards, and running errands. In the third paragraph, the motivation for doing the work is well explained, citing both a genuine enjoyment of helping others and future career aspirations in hospitality. Finally, the fourth paragraph outlines specific availability and unavailability periods. The tone is appropriately polite and formal for a letter to an acquaintance or neighbour. All parts are fully developed, and the response meets the band 8 descriptor for covering all parts of the task well with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with the purpose of the letter, followed by help offered, reasons for applying, and finally availability. Cohesive devices such as 'Specifically', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Regarding my availability' are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader smoothly through the text. Paragraphing is used effectively, with logical transitions between ideas. The referencing is clear and consistent, ensuring that information and ideas are arranged coherently from beginning to end, easily fulfilling the criteria for a band 8.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
The student demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for a general task of this nature. Phrases such as 'enthusiastic interest', 'upcoming summer', 'maintain an orderly home environment', and 'prior family commitments' showcase skilful use of uncommon lexical items. Word choice and collocations are accurate throughout, with no noticeable awkward phrasing. While the vocabulary is perhaps not entirely academic, it is completely suited to the context of a polite request letter and displays a high degree of precision, comfortably earning a band 8.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing features a wide range of complex sentence structures used with a high degree of accuracy. Examples include conditional and participial constructions such as 'As a resident of the same neighbourhood, I would love the opportunity...' and 'Moreover, as I plan to pursue a hospitality degree...'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the greeting, body paragraphs, and sign-off. There are no noticeable grammatical slips that impede communication, and the control over both simple and complex forms reflects solid band 8 performance.
