Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I am Sujan Patel writing this letter to inform you that I am excited to work with and help you for your household works in upcoming summer.
I have a lot of experience in DIY work because, I have been helping my father to do many household works like wire fitting, plumbing, gardening, etc. Along with that, I am good cook as well so I can serve you variety of dishes like Mexican, Italian, Chinese and many more.
The first and foremost reason to work with you is to improve my knowledge and skills from experienced person like you. Secondly, I always keen to do such kinds of volunteering works during my summer vacation to gain different experiences. Lastly, as a social person I would like to work with others.
Moreover, I am fully available because of my summer vacation in my school. So I can easily spend 5-6 hours at your house for working.
Looking forward to hear from you. Just provide me your address and available time to meet with you in person.
Thank you,
Sujan Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You suggested how you could help in her home by mentioning DIY work, plumbing, gardening, and cooking. You explained why you would like to do this work, giving reasons such as improving your knowledge, gaining volunteering experience, and being a social person. Finally, you explained your availability, stating that you are fully available during your school summer vacation and can spend 5-6 hours a day. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an acquaintance or local resident, and the purpose is clear throughout. All bullet points are fully addressed, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your letter has a clear overall progression. You used standard paragraphing, dedicating individual paragraphs to each bullet point from the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. Cohesive devices like 'Along with that,' 'The first and foremost reason,' and 'Moreover' are used to link your ideas, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, and the letter opens and closes appropriately. Organizing the letter into logical sections ensures that the information flows smoothly from your introduction to your final call to action.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You used an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, including terms like 'volunteering', 'vacation', and specific domestic tasks such as 'wire fitting', 'plumbing', and 'gardening'. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'household works' instead of 'housework' or 'household chores', and stating that you are 'good cook' instead of 'a good cook'. You also wrote 'always keen' instead of 'am always keen'. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they prevent you from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses with 'because' and 'so'. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the letter. For instance, the opening sentence has a missing article and awkward phrasing: 'I am Sujan Patel writing this letter'. Additionally, there is a missing auxiliary verb ('I always keen'), and a preposition error in the closing sentence ('Looking forward to hear' should be 'Looking forward to hearing'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but commas are occasionally misplaced. Because these errors occur frequently and affect readability, a band score of 6.0 is appropriate.
