Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter regarding an advertisement on voluntary work at home. I would like to join you for your household chores. I am a student studying at university. I have plenty of time to aide elderly people like you. I have experience as a personal support worker. So, I would be best person to hire.I have dealt with all age groups as well as helping them in shower, eating and sometimes cleaning work of their room.

I have a plenty of work experience in this field, also I am very fond of voluntary work. It can boost my cv for other jobs. Other than that, I am fascinated about this kind of work and I love to spend time with people who are alone. It would be great article for my university reseach.

I would like to share my schedule with you. I have to go gym in the morning around 2 hours and in the evening i have to look after my dog. Other time i will be available.

I am looking forward for your response.

Yours faithfully,

RHP

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required by the prompt. You suggested how you could help by assisting with household chores and personal care, explained that you would like to do this work because you enjoy volunteering, want to boost your CV, and love spending time with people who are alone, and explained your availability by mentioning your gym and dog-walking schedule. However, your response has a few slight misinterpretations; the prompt describes Mrs Barrett as an 'English-speaking woman who lives in your town' who advertised for 'someone to help her in her home', but you referred to the advertisement as being about 'voluntary work' and called her 'elderly people like you'. Despite these minor logical slips, all parts of the task are addressed and your ideas are sufficiently developed for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

Your letter is coherent overall and follows a logical structure. You begin with an appropriate opening greeting, organize your ideas into short paragraphs corresponding to different points of the prompt, and sign off correctly. However, your paragraphing and logical progression could be smoother. For example, your second paragraph jumps between your work experience and reasons for wanting the job, and your third paragraph introduces your schedule rather abruptly. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes in a repetitive or slightly mechanical way, such as starting multiple sentences with 'I'. Overall, the organization is clear enough to earn a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for this general task, using terms like 'household chores', 'personal support worker', and 'voluntary work'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as writing 'aide' instead of 'aid', 'best person' instead of 'the best person', 'a plenty of' instead of 'plenty of', and 'university reseach' instead of 'research'. Additionally, referring to the advertisement as 'voluntary work' does not fully fit the context of a private home advertisement. These errors do not impede communication, placing your lexical control firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter regarding...' and 'Other time i will be available.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout your text, including missing articles ('advertisement on voluntary work', 'best person to hire'), incorrect preposition use ('go gym'), informal spelling and capitalization ('i' instead of 'I'), and run-on sentences or missing commas. For instance, the sentence 'So, I would be best person to hire.I have dealt with...' contains a spacing and punctuation slip. Because your errors occasionally cause slight friction for the reader but communication remains clear, your grammar warrants a Band 6.0.
