Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter to express my interest to your advertisement. I was randomly scrolling facebook and I came to know that you are looking for someone to help you for your household chores from upcoming summer.

I have 3 years of practical experience working as a Personal Support Worker and working with the older adults like you to assist them for their activity of daily living and to help in common daily chores. I would be able to help you for your laundry, cooking, cleaning and mopping or anything else you would like to add.

I have been working in this field from several years so this work became a passion for me.I always be grateful to help people in various ways. You are really going to enjoy my company if you hire me.

I would like to attach my availability for this work:

Days available to work: Monday to Thursday (Mornings).

Days not available to work: Friday to Sunday (Evenings).

I am hoping a positive response from you.

Yours faithfully

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the prompt. You suggested how you could help Mrs Barrett by offering assistance with 'laundry, cooking, cleaning and mopping'. You stated why you would like to do this work by explaining that your experience has turned this field into a passion and you 'always be grateful to help people'. Finally, you explained your availability clearly, breaking it down into specific days and times. The tone is polite and appropriate for a semi-formal letter, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. You used paragraphs effectively to separate your introduction, your skills and proposed help, your motivation, your availability, and your sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, such as 'Finally' or logical linking through your descriptions. However, referencing and transitions between sentences could be smoother at times, such as the sudden shift into your availability list. Overall, the organisation is clear and easy to follow, making this a comfortable Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate and clearly communicates your message. You attempted some less common phrases related to care work, such as 'Personal Support Worker' and 'activity of daily living'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'interest to your advertisement' instead of 'interest in', and 'working with the older adults like you' where the preposition and article usage could be more natural. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and allows for successful communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I came to know that you are looking for...' and 'I would be able to help you for your laundry...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, including 'interest to your advertisement', 'upcoming summer' instead of 'the upcoming summer', and 'this work became a passion for me' (which would be better as 'has become'). Furthermore, 'I always be grateful' contains a missing modal or verb form. These errors occasionally disrupt the flow, but they do not impede overall understanding.
