Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope this message finds you well. The purpose of my email today is to express my interest to provide you my help with the household works as you have mentioned in the advertisement.

I am a cook by proffession and can prepare several cuisines with perfection. To be precise, Italian and Asian food is my speciality. I could help you with meal preparation and serving them. Apart from that, I would also be happy to contribute in house cleaning and organizing it.

I really want to do this work because I need some extra money to save for my college fees. Also, I would have some spare time in my hand because of my summer college break that I want to utilize effeciently. Consequently, this work would provide me an inner satisfaction.

I would be completely available to work in the evenings from 5pm to 9pm for the next summer including weekdays and weekends. However, my mornings would be slighty tight as I am planning to learn piano during that time.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Gurkirat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You suggested how you could help by mentioning cooking specific cuisines like Italian and Asian, as well as house cleaning and organizing. You clearly stated why you want to do the work, explaining your need to save for college fees and utilize your summer college break efficiently. Finally, you explained your availability by stating you can work in the evenings from 5pm to 9pm throughout the summer, while noting that your mornings are tied up with piano lessons. The tone is appropriate for a polite letter, and the purpose is entirely clear. Your response fully addresses all parts of the task with well-developed ideas, meeting the criteria for a solid band 8.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter is logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the purpose of the email to your specific skills, your motivation, and finally your availability. You make good use of paragraphing, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct topic (purpose/skills, reasons, and availability). Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Apart from that', 'Also', and 'Consequently', which help guide the reader through your ideas. While referencing and paragraphing are managed well, the transitional flow occasionally feels slightly mechanical, which prevents this from reaching the highest band. Overall, the organization is clear and progression is easy to follow, supporting a band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, using phrases like 'express my interest', 'speciality', and 'utilize efficiently'. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'proffession' (profession), 'provide you my help' (provide help to you or assist you), and 'effeciently' (efficiently). You also used 'household works', which is unnatural phrasing compared to 'household chores' or 'housework'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly, fitting the band 6.5 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You show a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional or modal-like structures such as 'I could help you with meal preparation' and 'I would be completely available'. Control over grammar and punctuation is generally good, though there are a few minor slips and awkward prepositions, such as 'spare time in my hand' (on my hands) and 'slighty tight' (slightly tight). The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and communication is never impeded by grammatical issues. This balanced performance aligns well with a band 7.0 score.
