Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope this message finds you well. The purpose of my email today is to express my interest in providing you with my help in the household chores as you have mentioned in the advertisement.

I am a cook by profession and can prepare several cuisines with perfection. To be precise, Italian and Asian foods are my speciality. I could help you with meal preparation and serving them. Apart from that, I would also be happy to help you with house cleaning and organizing it.

I really want to do this work because I need some extra money to save for my college fees. Also, I would have some spare time on my hands because of my college summer break that I want to utilize effeciently. Consequently, this work would provide me with inner satisfaction.

I would be completely available to work in the evenings from 5pm to 9pm for the next summer including weekdays and weekends. However, my mornings would be slightly tight as I am planning to learn piano during that time.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Gurkirat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully and effectively addresses all bullet points outlined in the prompt. You successfully suggest how you could help Mrs Barrett by offering specific tasks such as cooking Italian and Asian foods, serving meals, and cleaning and organizing the house. You clearly explain your motivation for taking on the work, mentioning your desire to save money for college fees and efficiently utilize your summer break. Furthermore, you provide a precise schedule detailing when you will be available, specifically evenings from 5 pm to 9 pm throughout the summer, while also noting when you will not be available due to piano lessons in the mornings. The tone is appropriately polite for a formal letter to an acquaintance, and all ideas are fully developed and well-supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter is logically organized and easy to follow. Each bullet point is addressed in its own logical section, resulting in a clear progression of ideas from your introduction to your final availability. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your suggestions, motivations, and availability. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, as seen with transitional phrases like 'Apart from that', 'Also', and 'Consequently'. However, a few transitions feel slightly formulaic, which keeps the response at a Band 7 level rather than higher. Overall, the information flows smoothly and the purpose of the letter remains clear throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas precisely, utilizing less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'meal preparation', 'speciality', and 'inner satisfaction'. Word choices are generally appropriate for a general correspondence task. However, there is a minor spelling error ('effeciently' instead of 'efficiently') and some phrasing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'help' and 'work'. Despite these minor limitations, the vocabulary used allows for clear communication and shows a good attempt at incorporating topic-specific lexis related to household chores and employment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your letter exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-style construction in 'as you have mentioned in the advertisement' and the concessive clause in 'However, my mornings would be slightly tight as I am planning to learn piano during that time.' The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of verb tenses and modal verbs is generally solid. You demonstrate good punctuation control. There are only very occasional minor mechanical slips, such as the spelling error mentioned previously, which do not impede communication at all. The grammar is strong and supports clear, polite communication.
