Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to express my interest in helping you in your house chores next summer. I saw the advertisement in a newspaper yesterday.
I am a student of Home Support Worker program, I believe I am a strong candidate for this position. It focuses heavily on household management, and meal preparation also. I would help you in all tasks including cleaning, preparing food, and organizing items at home. I will do my best and perform my duties with responsibility.
During next summer, I have college vacations and would like to gain some experience. Moreover, I can earn some money for my college fee, which will prove to be beneficial for my parents financially.
Due to my holiday, I will be available for both weekdays as well as weekends. Please feel free to contact me if you need more information.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Raman.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The candidate successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, you suggest how you could help Mrs Barrett by stating, 'I would help you in all tasks including cleaning, preparing food, and organizing items at home.' Second, you clearly explain why you want to do this work, mentioning your desire to gain experience and earn money for your college fees. Third, you address your availability by stating, 'Due to my holiday, I will be available for both weekdays as well as weekends.' The letter adopts an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for a job inquiry and maintains a clear purpose throughout, fully satisfying the requirements of a general task 1 letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Information is presented in a sensible progression, starting with the purpose of the letter, moving to background and duties, discussing availability, and closing politely. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as your qualifications and your motivations. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, using transition words like 'Moreover' and 'Due to my holiday' to link ideas effectively. Referencing is clear throughout, making the letter easy for the reader to follow without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like 'household management', 'meal preparation', and 'Home Support Worker program'. There are occasional slight awkwardness in word choice, such as writing 'house chores' instead of 'household chores'. However, less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success, and spelling and word choices do not impede communication. The tone remains polite and appropriate for a professional job inquiry letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure in 'which will prove to be beneficial for my parents financially.' Control of grammar and punctuation is generally good, with frequent error-free sentences. There is a minor punctuation error in the second paragraph where a comma splice occurs: 'I am a student of Home Support Worker program, I believe I am a strong candidate for this position.' Despite this and a missing article before 'Home Support Worker program', the errors do not impede understanding and communication remains very clear.
