Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly suggested how you could help Mrs Barrett by mentioning 'janitorial work, cooking, lawning, laundry, etcetera'. You also explained why you would like to do this work, noting that you want to earn extra money and gain problem-solving skills for your personal support worker studies. Finally, your availability is outlined, detailing when you are free and when you are busy due to singing classes and charity work. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to an acquaintance or local resident, and the purpose of the letter is fully clear. All requirements of the prompt are successfully met, demonstrating a well-developed response that effectively communicates your message.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs that separate the different points of the prompt, resulting in a coherent overall arrangement. Logical connectors and cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from that', 'Since', and 'Furthermore' are used to link your ideas together, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is generally easy to follow, moving from an introduction and your skills to your motivations, and finally to your availability. Referencing is mostly clear, though a few sentences are somewhat densely packed with clauses. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your greeting, body points, and sign-off, contributing to the overall readability of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'commence', 'comprehend', and 'charity work'. However, there are several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'houseehold' (spelling error), 'lawning' (an unnatural verb form; 'gardening' or 'mowing the lawn' would be better), 'thses' (repeated spelling error for 'these'), and 'aids me to comprehend problem solving skills' (inaccurate collocation; 'helps me develop problem-solving skills'). Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, and your intent is easily understood by the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional structures and subordinate clauses introduced by 'Since' and 'Although'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. For instance, the sentence starting with 'Since my college holidays commence...' is an incomplete fragment because it lacks a main clause. There are also agreement and preposition errors, such as 'I live nearby your place' ('nearby' does not take 'your' directly in that way) and 'charity work I offers in old age home' (subject-verb agreement error and missing article). Punctuation is occasionally faulty, particularly in the run-on structure of the final availability sentence. These errors do not impede communication, but they lower the overall grammatical accuracy.
