Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to express my interest in the role advertised on newspaper. It stated that you are in need of a care worker to assist you for a few hours during the day for next summer.
I believe that I am the best fit for the job because I have almost 2 years experience taking care of my aged grand-parents. During that time, I ensured to take care care of the home by cleaning and cooking for them as required. This would definitely translate to me providing the best service if I am given the job.
Furthermore, I am currently in my final year at the University of Lagos and i need the extra wages to pay my school fees. The experience i gain from working with you would be really helpful in my future endeavour as a medical student.
I would be available to provide my sevices for 4 hours each day. Unfortunately, I cannot increase the time because of how demanding my programme is.
I hope to get a favourable response from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Oyinloluwa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all bullet points of the prompt. You successfully suggest how you could help Mrs Barrett by offering to clean and cook, and explaining that you can work for 4 hours each day. You also clearly state why you would like to do the work, mentioning your experience with your grandparents and your need for extra wages to pay school fees as a medical student. Finally, your availability is clearly outlined, including your limitation due to a demanding study programme. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application, and the ideas are well-developed throughout. This meets the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose corresponding to the bullet points in the task instructions. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Unfortunately' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate your introduction, reasons for applying, financial motivations, and availability. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraph transitions could be slightly smoother to reach a higher band. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, earning a solid Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items such as 'express my interest', 'translate to me providing', and 'future endeavour'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing 'on newspaper' instead of 'in the newspaper', and repeating 'take care' awkwardly in 'ensured to take care care of the home'. Spelling is generally good, but 'grand-parents' and 'i' (lowercase in the third paragraph) show minor slips. The range is sufficient for precision and flexibility, but these occasional errors keep the lexical score at a Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I believe that I am the best fit for the job because I have almost 2 years experience taking care of my aged grand-parents.' There are several minor grammatical errors, including missing capitalization for the pronoun 'i' in the third paragraph, and a missing preposition in 'advertised on newspaper'. Additionally, '2 years experience' should ideally be '2 years of experience'. Despite these errors, the sentences are generally clear and communication is never impeded. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.5 descriptor.
