Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barret,

I am writing this letter to apply for position you advertised on newspaper for upcoming summer.

First of all, I noticed in you advertisement that you speak english only. It is realy hard to find a person in town who can speak english, luckily I can speak. Moreover, I also have few years of working in with other families from overseas. I helped them to organize there houses, and did everday cleaning for them. I can provide their references if you want.

On the other hand, working with you would be a huge opportunity for me as well. Because everday talking with you can help me improve my english skill. Also as I have summer vacations, I can earn some money to support my next semester's fee. I can come for interview at your convenience.

I hope you will consider my application. I will wait for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly suggested how you could help Mrs Barrett by offering to organize houses and do everyday cleaning, and you provided reasons for wanting the work, such as improving your English skills and earning money for university fees. Additionally, you explained your availability by mentioning that you are free during the summer vacations and can attend an interview at her convenience. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal request letter, and all three parts of the prompt are well-addressed with relevant and supporting ideas. Overall, the task requirements are thoroughly fulfilled, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, making good use of paragraphing to separate different topics such as job duties, personal motivations, and availability. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, with phrases like 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' helping to structure the response. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and referencing is occasionally slightly loose, such as the pronoun use in 'help her in her home'. Nevertheless, the overarching progression is clear and easy to follow, supporting a coherent and well-structured piece of writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to successfully convey your message about job experience and personal motivations. You attempted some less common vocabulary, such as 'opportunity', 'convenience', and 'references'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'apply for position you advertised on newspaper' instead of 'apply for the position you advertised in the newspaper', and 'everday cleaning' instead of 'everyday cleaning'. Spelling errors like 'realy' instead of 'really' also appear. Despite these slips, the vocabulary remains sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively without causing significant misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You have demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as 'Moreover, I also have few years of working in with other families from overseas' and 'Because everday talking with you can help me improve my english skill.' While there is an attempt at variety, grammatical errors are present, including missing articles ('apply for position', 'on newspaper'), incorrect prepositions ('working in with'), and sentence fragments starting with subordinating conjunctions ('Because everday talking...'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to fully understand your intended meaning.
