Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter about the advertisement you published in the newspaper.

I am willing to assist you in your home. I could help you with different tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, and doing a care of your child.

Actually, I have had a short-term break from my academics. Therefore, I am available for you for 10 days, with a minimum of 4 to 5 hours per day. Although, I am working part-time at Tim Hortons, but, I am also looking for short-term work.

I am available for you from Monday to Saturday between 7.00 am to 5.30 pm. Except on Sundays, as on that days, I will be busy for doing the prepartion of my cooking exam. However, in an emergency, I am available for on-call shifts, for that you can call me.

If you need any further information, do not feel hesitate to call me anytime.

Yours sincerely,

Gurleen kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points outlined in the prompt. You suggest ways you could help Mrs Barrett by mentioning 'cooking, cleaning, and doing a care of your child.' You explain why you would like to do this work by stating that you are looking for short-term work during a break from your academics. Furthermore, you clearly explain your availability, including days and hours you are free (Monday to Saturday between 7.00 am and 5.30 pm) and when you are not available (Sundays due to exam preparation). All parts of the task are addressed appropriately with a clear and polite tone suitable for a general letter, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall progression and is logically organized into short, readable paragraphs that separate the different points of the prompt. However, paragraphing and referencing are slightly basic and mechanical. While cohesive devices like 'Although' and 'However' are used, some connectors are misused or awkward, such as 'Although, I am working part-time at Tim Hortons, but, I am also looking for short-term work' which incorrectly pairs 'although' with 'but'. Additionally, referencing in phrases like 'for that you can call me' is a bit clunky. With cleaner transitions and more natural paragraphing, a higher band would be achieved.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message to Mrs Barrett. You use some appropriate phrases related to employment and daily routines, such as 'short-term break,' 'part-time,' and 'on-call shifts.' However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as writing 'doing a care of your child' instead of 'caring for your child' or 'childcare,' and 'doing the prepartion' instead of 'preparing.' Spelling is generally good, with only one minor slip ('prepartion'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but lacks more sophisticated or less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses like 'If you need any further information, do not feel hesitate to call me anytime.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as 'do not feel hesitate' (should be 'do not hesitate'), 'on that days' (should be 'on those days' or 'on that day'), and the double conjunction error mentioned previously ('Although... but'). Punctuation and article usage could also be refined. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and your meaning remains clear to the reader.
