Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing in reference to your advertisement regarding the avaliability of someone to help you around the house for a few hours a day next summer.

I love to communicate my interest in the position as I meet all the required critereas of the position as I love only two streets down to your house and am also a native English speaker.

As the summer break in my college starts March 2027, just at the edge of spring, I believe I would have ample time to dedicate myself completely to the job without any distractions. Further, since I have been doing housekeeping besides my studies for about 2 years now I believe my expertise in the job would be highly helpful in doing the job. Also, since helping others' has always been my passion which also motivated me to pursue nursing I would greatly enjoy doing this job as well as it aligns with my passion.

I would be avaliable to work from morning 8:00 am till 9:00 pm throughout the whole week however I wouldnt be able to work on Sundays as I have my summer classes on the weekends. However, it won't hinder my ability whatsoever in performing my job.

I would really appreciate if you would consider me for the position and for any other information required please feel free to contact me.

Yours' sincerely,

Sana Munir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly suggested how you could help by mentioning housekeeping experience and living only two streets away. You explained why you would like to do the work by linking it to your passion for helping others and your background in nursing. Finally, you outlined your availability, stating you can work from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm throughout the week, though you noted a slight contradiction or confusion regarding weekends when you mentioned not being able to work on Sundays due to classes, yet also mentioned working throughout the whole week. Despite this minor confusion, all parts of the prompt are addressed clearly and appropriately for a general correspondence task. Therefore, a solid band score is warranted for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose in line with the requirements of a formal request letter. You open with a clear purpose, move on to your qualifications and motivations, discuss your availability, and close with a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'further', 'also', and 'however' are used to connect ideas, though the repetition of 'since' and 'however' creates a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your ideas. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter guides the reader smoothly from introduction to conclusion, fitting well within the descriptors for this band level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common items such as 'reference', 'dedicate', and 'expertise'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'avaliability' (availability), 'critereas' (criteria), 'love only two streets down' (live only two streets down), and 'avaliable' (available). Additionally, the phrase 'morning 8:00 am' is redundant. While these lexical errors and spelling mistakes do not completely impede communication, they highlight a lack of precision and control that prevents the response from achieving a higher band score in this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully, such as 'As the summer break in my college starts March 2027... I believe I would have ample time...'. However, there are persistent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. Examples include missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms in phrases like 'as I love only two streets down' and 'helping others' has always been my passion'. There is also an incorrect sign-off form ('Yours' sincerely'). While these errors occur frequently, they rarely impede the overall meaning and communication of your letter.
