Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this in response to an advertisement that I recently saw on Indeed that you are looking for someone to assist you in your home for a few hours a day next summer. I think, I am a best candidate for this job as I am patient, responsible and fluent in English language along with a 2 year of professional experience as a home support worker. I can prepare meals for you as well as help you in cleaning work. In addition to this, I can take you for some recreational activities which can help you to socialise yourself with the community.
I have always been passionate to support people with disabilities. Not only this would provides me valuable experience for my career growth but it also provides me an oppertunity to explore more about different culture and traditions while working with you. Therefore, this work would be beneficial for both of us.
The best part is the location of your home is not so far from my place which increases my availability. Thus, I am available from Monday to Friday from 12pm to 8pm. However, I am not available for weekends as I have some personal commitments with my family. If you want to schedule your own hours for weekdays then we can discuss according to that as well.
Thank you for considering my application, I look forward to your kind response.
Yours sincerely,
Harmanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You have successfully covered all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You suggested specific ways to help Mrs Barrett in her home, such as preparing meals, doing cleaning work, and taking her for recreational activities. You also clearly stated why you want to do this work, mentioning your passion for supporting people with disabilities and your desire to gain career experience and learn about different cultures. Additionally, you provided clear details regarding your availability from Monday to Friday, 12pm to 8pm, while explicitly stating that you are unavailable on weekends. Your purpose is evident, the tone is appropriately polite for a formal letter, and all requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter is logically organized with a clear overall progression. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate different themes, starting with your introduction and offers of help, followed by your motivations, and concluding with your availability and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Not only this would', and 'Therefore' are employed to connect your ideas, although some transitions could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, and the structure guides the reader naturally from your initial job interest to your practical scheduling details.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task. Phrases like 'professional experience', 'recreational activities', and 'personal commitments' show a solid command of everyday formal English. However, there are a few lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'oppertunity' instead of 'opportunity', and awkward phrasing like 'socialise yourself with the community' rather than simply 'socialise with the community'. Despite these minor flaws, your vocabulary is precise enough to convey your meaning without difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You make use of a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors that prevent a higher band. For example, you wrote 'Not only this would provides me valuable experience', which contains errors in inversion ('would provide') and verb agreement ('provides'). There is also an unnecessary comma in 'I think, I am a best candidate'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and fully comprehensible, showing a decent grasp of English grammar.
