Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Berrett,

I am writing to response to an advertisement in which you mentioned that you are looking for someone who could help you at your home. I want to tell you that I have experience in healthcare as a Social Support Worker as well as PSW. I could assist you with your daily living activities and maintain your dignity. Apart from this, I could prepare simple meals for you on specific times.

I would like to get this job, because I am looking for a part-time job to pay off my family expenses. This job location is very close to home and I could save my time and transportation fare as well.

As this job location is not far from my home, I am available everyday in the evening after 5pm. I am also available in the morning from Monday to Friday before 11am. I am not available on Saturday and Sunday in the mornings.

I look forward to hearing back from you,

Your sincerely,

Sukhveer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, you suggested how you could help Mrs Barrett by offering assistance with daily living activities, maintaining dignity, and preparing simple meals. Second, you explained why you want the job, citing family expenses and the convenient proximity of the location. Finally, you clearly detailed your availability, specifying evenings after 5 pm and mornings Monday to Friday before 11 am, while noting your unavailability on weekend mornings. The tone of the letter is polite and appropriate for a general correspondence. However, there are minor lapses in addressing the addressee seamlessly, and the response is relatively straightforward in its development. Overall, the requirements of the task have been fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph is dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt: the first covers how you can help, the second explains your motivation, and the third outlines your availability. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the letter. Cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'because', and 'As this job location' are utilised to connect ideas, although some transitions are slightly basic. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow the letter without difficulty, placing it comfortably within the Band 7 criteria.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to caregiving such as 'daily living activities', 'Social Support Worker', and 'transportation fare'. However, there is a minor spelling slip in the salutation ('Berrett' instead of 'Barrett') and a collocation error in the opening sentence ('writing to response' instead of 'writing in response'). While attempts are made to use topic-specific vocabulary, the range lacks the flexibility and precision of higher bands, and vocabulary choices remain somewhat safe and everyday. Nevertheless, communication is never impeded by these lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using conditional and causal clauses effectively (e.g., 'As this job location is not far from my home, I am available...'). There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'on specific times' instead of 'at specific times', and the sign-off contains a minor punctuation and word choice issue ('Your sincerely' instead of 'Yours sincerely'). Despite these errors, the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically sound, and punctuation is generally handled well. The grammatical control is solid and supports smooth communication throughout.
