Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I have seen your advert and I am writing today to express my interest in providing you a helping hand in your home in the next summers.
I could assist you in multiple ways such as cleaning, laundry, and bringing groceries. Apart from this, I can cook for you, as I have done a masters in cookery. I love to cook and I can cook different cuisines from all around the world. Furthermore, if you want, I can take care of your garden and backyard as well.
I would love to help you as my part time job for next summer, since I live really close to you and It can save my commuting time. Moreover, I do not decided any job for next summers and I think this is the best opportunity for me. As you need me for only few hours, I might be available any time during the wekdays but for the weekends, I can only assist you between 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Thank you for taking my request into consideration. I hope to hear back from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Jessica Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You have fully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully suggested how you could help Mrs Barrett by mentioning specific domestic chores such as cleaning, cooking, and gardening. You clearly explained why you would like to do this work, noting that you live nearby, which saves commuting time, and that you have not yet secured a job for next summer. Furthermore, you outlined your availability precisely, detailing your schedule for weekdays and weekends. The tone of the letter is appropriately polite and formal for a request made to an acquaintance in the community. All parts of the prompt are well-developed and easy to follow, meeting all requirements for the task response criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter is logically structured, moving smoothly from a polite opening and statement of purpose to specific offers of help, reasons for applying, availability, and a courteous sign-off. You make effective use of cohesive devices to link your thoughts, such as 'Apart from this,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Moreover,' which help guide the reader through your ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. Referencing is clear throughout, and the progression of ideas is natural and easy to follow. Overall, cohesion is well managed, contributing to a coherent and professional letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common and topic-specific items, such as 'express my interest,' 'multiple ways,' and 'different cuisines from all around the world.' However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as writing 'in the next summers' instead of 'next summer' and 'bringing groceries' instead of 'fetching or delivering groceries' or 'grocery shopping.' Additionally, you used the phrase 'masters in cookery' where 'degree in culinary arts' would be more natural. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly and appropriately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('if you want, I can take care of your garden') and relative clauses. There are several error-free sentences, and your punctuation and capitalization are generally accurate. However, you make a few noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'I do not decided any job for next summers,' where the verb tense and voice are incorrect (should be 'I have not decided on any job' or 'I do not have a job lined up'), and 'It can save my commuting time' following a comma where a period or conjunction would be better. These errors do not impede communication, but they keep the score at this level.
