Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I have recently saw your advertise that you are looking for someone who can help you to clean your house for few hours a day next summer.

I can help you to move heavy things like refrigirator, washig machine and etc because I am physically fit enough to handle this kind of stuff. I can help you to bring groceries from the supermarket if you are busy in doing other work.

I am interested to do this work becuase you are looking for help in next summer, and I will be free because my studies will be done next summer. I am planning to earn money by myself rather than depending on my dad's money, so that's why it will be good start for me if you hire me to clean your house.

My avalibility for next summer would be Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, because I am thinking to join swimming classes in the evening for next summer. I would not prefer to do work on weekends, but if you still need me on weekends then I will be available for on call shift.

Thank you for your time. I will be looking forward for your reply.

Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student covers all bullet points required by the prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. Specifically, the writer suggests ways to help Mrs Barrett around the home, such as moving heavy items like a 'refrigirator' and bringing groceries. The letter also clearly states the motivation for wanting the work, which is to earn independent money after finishing studies, and outlines specific availability from Monday to Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM while declining weekend work except for emergencies. The tone is polite and well-suited for a personal correspondence task. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with relevant, coherent ideas throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct point required by the prompt, such as proposed tasks in the second paragraph, motivation in the third, and availability in the fourth. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'because' and 'so that's why', although referencing and transitions could be slightly more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas clearly, ensuring the reader follows the progression of thoughts without difficulty. Overall structure meets the criteria for a well-organised functional letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating everyday actions and intentions. However, there are noticeable spelling errors such as 'refrigirator' and 'washig machine', alongside awkward phrasing like 'busy in doing other work' instead of 'busy with other tasks'. The writer attempts some less common functional language, but vocabulary range remains somewhat limited and mechanical in places, relying on repetitive expressions. While these lexical slips and spelling mistakes do not impede overall communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher band in this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like subordinate clauses introduced by 'because' and conditional clauses starting with 'if'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward constructions, such as 'I have recently saw your advertise' (incorrect tense and noun form instead of 'advertisement') and 'interested to do this work' (instead of 'interested in doing'). Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also appear, such as run-on constructions. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the grammatical control is sufficient for a straightforward communicative task.
