Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing in response to your advertisement for someone to help you in your home next summer. I would be very interested in this opportunity and believe I could be of great assistance to you.

I could help with a variety of household tasks, including cleaning, doing the laundry, preparing simple meals and grocery shopping. I would also be happy to help with other daily activities, such as organising things around the house or accompanying you when you need to go out.

I would like to do this work because I enjoy helping people and I am comfortable taking responsibility for household duties. In addition, I am looking for a part-time job during the summer, so this position would suit me well and would allow me to gain valuable work experience.

Regarding my availability, I am available from Monday to Thursday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. I can also work on Friday mornings if necessary. However, I will not be available on weekends because I have family commitments. My availability may also be slightly limited during the first week of July due to a prior commitment.

I would be grateful if you could let me know if you would like to discuss the position further. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

sukh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The candidate has fully satisfied all the requirements of the prompt. Every bullet point is thoroughly addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas. First, the writer suggests specific household tasks such as 'cleaning, doing the laundry, preparing simple meals and grocery shopping.' Second, the motivation for taking the job is clearly articulated, noting a desire to help people, gain work experience, and take responsibility. Third, availability is outlined with specific days and times (Monday to Thursday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.), alongside clear exceptions for weekends and a prior commitment in July. The tone is entirely appropriate for a polite, semi-formal correspondence with a local resident. Ideas are extended naturally without unnecessary padding, making this a strong performance for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The letter displays a clear logical organisation and progression from start to finish. Each paragraph serves a distinct communicative purpose corresponding directly to the prompt instructions. For instance, the transition from suggesting help in the second paragraph to explaining the motivation in the third paragraph is smooth and logical. Cohesive devices are handled naturally, using referencing phrases like 'Regarding my availability' and connectors such as 'In addition' and 'However' appropriately without mechanical overuse. Paragraphing is skilfully managed, with each main idea grouped into its own distinct, well-structured paragraph. Overall, the flow of information is natural and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary that easily serves the task requirements. Common functional vocabulary is handled accurately, and the writer attempts some less common and topic-specific items with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'household tasks', 'part-time job', 'valuable work experience', and 'family commitments'. Word choice is generally precise, and collocation is natural throughout the letter (e.g., 'preparing simple meals', 'accompanying you when you need to go out'). There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, reflecting a solid command of everyday written English suitable for a semi-formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response features a good variety of sentence structures, mixing simple and complex forms effectively. The writer successfully employs modal verbs and dependent clauses to express politeness, intention, and condition, such as in the sentences 'I would be very interested in this opportunity and believe I could be of great assistance to you' and 'My availability may also be slightly limited during the first week of July due to a prior commitment.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Grammar and tense control are consistent and reliable, ensuring that meaning is communicated with complete clarity at all times.
