Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. Recently, I encountered with an advertisemen in the city newspaper that you are looking for a helper in your home for upcoming summer. I can help you in household chores such as housekeeping, preapring meals, doing laundry as well as grocery. I can look for your house when you will be away from it in a day for few hours.

I am working as a Personal Support Worker in a long term care home for a part time. Along with that, I am studying for a Registered Practical Nurse. From a long time, I am looking forward for an another job as I need money to pay for my studies. However, at the same I want something near to my residence and flexible. Astonishingly, your home address is ten minutes walk from my house. From my end, it would be convenient and will be a phone call away from your residence.

I am available to work during day time and specifically from four to nine in the evening. During that time, I will be available seven day a week.

I will be glad to have this opportunity. Don't forget, I will be looking forward for your reply.

Best regards,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task prompt. First, she clearly suggested how she could help around the house, mentioning specific chores like housekeeping, preparing meals, laundry, and grocery shopping. Second, she explained her motivations, stating she needs extra income for her nursing studies and appreciates the convenient location. Third, she detailed her availability, specifying that she is free during the evenings from four to nine, seven days a week. The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal, maintaining a suitable letter format. All parts of the prompt are well-covered with relevant ideas, demonstrating a clear understanding of General Training Task 1 requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organization. The opening greeting sets the appropriate tone, and the body paragraphs logically separate the job proposal, the personal motivations, and the availability schedule. Cohesive devices such as 'Along with that,' 'However,' and 'From my end,' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Astonishingly,' which is not entirely fitting for the context. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct themes, helping the reader navigate the letter smoothly despite minor referencing issues.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general transactional letter, successfully incorporating terms related to employment and daily chores, such as 'household chores,' 'grocery,' 'flexible,' and 'convenient.' However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'encountered with an advertisemen' instead of 'encountered an advertisement' or 'saw an advertisement,' and 'preapring meals' which contains a spelling error. Despite these slips and some awkward phrasing like 'look for your house' instead of 'look after,' the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am working as a Personal Support Worker in a long term care home for a part time.' Grammatical accuracy is mixed; while many sentences are clear, there are recurrent errors in prepositions and articles, such as 'for a part time' instead of 'part-time,' 'From a long time' instead of 'For a long time,' and 'an another job' instead of 'another job.' Tense usage is mostly appropriate, and punctuation is generally sound, but the presence of these frequent foundational errors places the grammar score firmly in the band 6 category.
