Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this letter in response to your advertisement regarding the need for a helper for your home. I am a student with Australian nationality, and efficient in the english language so it will be convenient to have a conversation with you. I can help in your regular household chores, organizing your home, and assisting your children in their studies. Currently, I am pursuing a postgraduate degree in sciences which enables me to help your kids with their projects and assignments.
I am a certified home science student so I love to manage the interior with eye-catching handmade items, and this job will definitely help me to polish my talent. Moreover, I need work to meet my academic as well as my personal expenses.
While the college keeps me busy for six days a week from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, I can manage the working hours from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. As my almost the whole week is occupied, I need a Sunday off for my personal space.
I hope you to find me suitable for your requirements, and looking for your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Pratibha Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response fully and effectively addresses all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the student suggests how they could help in the home, mentioning regular chores, organizing, and assisting with children's studies. Second, they clearly state why they would like to do this work, noting their background in home science and their need to cover academic and personal expenses. Third, they explain their availability in detail, outlining the specific evening hours they are free and noting that they require Sundays off due to a busy college schedule. The tone is appropriately polite and formal for a letter to an acquaintance or neighbor. All requirements of the task are successfully met with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter and proposed assistance, to the motivations for the job, to availability and scheduling. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Moreover' and 'While', to connect ideas and create a cohesive whole. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different thematic points, contributing to a smooth reading experience. Referencing is clear, and the overall structure easily guides the reader from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted with some success, such as 'postgraduate degree', 'efficient', and 'eye-catching handmade items'. While there is a minor lexical slip ('efficient in the english language' instead of 'proficient in English'), the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning without causing confusion. Spelling is accurate throughout, and terms related to education and daily chores fit the context well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses using 'While' and relative clauses with 'which'. Grammatical control is generally quite good, with numerous error-free sentences. However, there are a few minor awkward phrasing issues and punctuation slips, such as 'I hope you to find me suitable' instead of 'I hope you will find me suitable' and the slightly unnatural phrasing 'As my almost the whole week is occupied'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the grammar easily supports the communicative purpose.
